CHENNAI : RailWire, a ‘Miniratna’ category susbidary of the Indian Railways, has entered the broadband space in Chennai, introducing high-speed optic fibre based broadband internet connection at Rail Nagar in Koyambedu as a pilot project.
According to officials of Nicheken Technologies who are providing the last-mile infrastructure and the technology for the internet services, the company is building an ‘information highway’ into the railway residential colony from which high-speed and reliable internet can be distributed for domestic connections.
This service will have other facilities like intercom, video/audio on demand, etc.
“This technology makes it more manageable for giving customer support services. The equipment would guide the support staff in solving the issue immediately,” said SJ Jeya Sankar Kumar, the general manager of NicheKen Technologies .
“Unlike the current system, the fibre would be laid closer to the home, which increases reliability of the connection. The advantage is that there can be a Inter Floor Distribution (IFD) or Inter Building Distribution (IBD),” said T Chandrasekaran, a former scientist with C-DOT, who is now a senior staffer at the company.
The installation charges would be `1,000 and the company, which partnered with MTNL to provide these services in Mumbai, plans to connect different areas across Chennai.
