The national flag gallery at the Fort Museum, among other exhibits, traces the evolution of the Indian flag

As the nation marks its 68th Independence Day, tucked away in the second floor of the quaint Fort Museum is the first Indian national flag hoisted from Fort St. George.
“The Indian national flag that was hoisted on the morning of 15 August, 1947, at Fort St. George is made of silk and measures eight feet by twelve feet,” said an official.
The flag, which was part of the museum’s reserve collection, has been on display since Republic Day last year, the official said. The response has been very encouraging, he added.
“The flag is an important part of our history and we wanted the public to see it. Several school students and families have visited the museum and this particular gallery,” the official said.
The Fort Museum, which comes under the Archaeological Survey of India, has galleries that display arms, medals, portraits and coins, among several other exhibits, primarily from the colonial period.
The national flag gallery and the adjacent freedom fighters gallery, among other exhibits, trace the evolution of the Indian flag and the earliest postal stamps of independent India.
The freedom fighters gallery has a list of over 1,000 freedom fighters, apart from photos and copies of some documents given to the museum by freedom fighters’ families.
“We request families of freedom fighters to come forward and share photos, documents or any information about them so that we can display it at the museum,” the official said.
The period museum has been functioning from what is called the Exchange Building at Fort St. George, since 1948.

'Madras Week' celebrations lined up as city turns 375

Heritage walks, exhibition of old photographs, film screenings and culinary sessions, among other activities are lined up here as part of the annual 'Madras Week' celebrations marking the 375th birth anniversary of the historic city. The foundation day celebrations will be held from August 17-25. Madras, rechristened Chennai, was believed to have been founded on August 22, 1639.

The long list of events also include commemorating the centenary of bombardment of the metropolis by a German ship during World War I in September 1914. Among the various programmes scheduled are a range of heritage walks and tours, lectures, photography contest, culinary sessions, films and documentaries screening and workshop among others, the organisers, a group of volunteers from various walks of life, including well-known historian S Muthiah, told reporters here.
The Australian Consulate General here will also organise an exhibition of photographs, portraits and artefacts of historical importance to commemorate the centenary of the bombardment of Madras by German ship Emden, which was later defeated by the Australian Navy.
This was also to "celebrate the historical and ongoing defence and security links between Australia and India," even as armed forces of the two countries had fought 'alongside' each other in the two World Wars, the Consulate General said in a release. Further, the two countries continue to serve alongside each other in the UN peacekeeping operations in "troubled areas worldwide," it added.

When Madras marked Independence
67 years ago, celebrations took on various hues as the city rose to the dawn of the country’s Independence
As the clock struck twelve on Friday the 15, 67 years ago, the air in the Old Congress House Grounds in Royapettah resounded with the jubilant cheers of a thronging crowd.
The Congress Party flag bearing the charkha was being lowered, just as the new flag of the Indian Dominion was unfurled to its newly sovereign people. Meanwhile, thousands in other pockets of the city frantically tuned into community radio sets to follow the proceedings of the transfer of power taking place in New Delhi.
Amidst an electric refrain of ‘Vande mataram’, Madras ushered in the dawn of the country’s independence.
People flooded the streets across the city, participating enthusiastically in elaborate processions heralding a new era. Long parades bearing photos of Gandhi, Nehru and Bose, and accompanied by chariots, triumphantly powered through alleys in People’s Park, George Town and High Court Beach, where a public meeting was observed.
Triplicane beach welcomed another procession bedecked with elephants and camels, and led by K. Kamaraj, under the auspices of the Madras District Congress Committee.
Interestingly, celebrations appropriated varied tones as varied stakeholders of the city made it their own. The mill workers of the B&C mills of the Perambur Barracks celebrated in the hope that ‘freedom’ would also propel independence for labourers.
For the Muslim community in the city, the revelry was marked by the need to pronounce allegiance to the Indian nation at a time when the memory of Partition was still fresh.
The city had transformed into an arena of carnivalesque festivity. The tricolour and festoons competed against each other in leaving every façade adorned.
The merchant communities in the Kotwal Bazaar, Bunder Street and Park Town areas distributed payasam and cooked rice to the needy. Banners reading ‘Long live India’, plastered across roads in Pondy Bazaar and T. Nagar, screamed for attention.
Celebrations, as it were, were not merely land-bound. In Madras Harbour, the sirens of docked ships pierced the air soon after the chairman of the Port Trust, M.S. Venkatraman, hoisted the national flag.
At Meenambakkam, an aircraft of the Madras Flying club piloted by Mr. Tyndale Biscoe wowed audiences by flying low over a flag mast and tipping its wing in salute.
As the sun set, the city was illuminated with a sea of lamps. Public landmarks like Ripon building and Central and Egmore stations were lit up with coloured bulbs.
Madras celebrated the nation’s independence in style. While it may have been one of the first bases to be subsumed by colonial dominion, it sure did pull out all stops to rejoice in its liberation.

First underground Metro network by Dec. 2015

The entire 45-km network will be operational by August 2016

The first underground Metro Rail network from Egmore to Thirumangalam will be completed by December 2015. The entire 45-km network of the Chennai Metro Rail will be operational by August 2016, according to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).
Come December, the tunnelling work along this 9.5-km stretch on Poonamallee High Road will be complete, officials said. “We plan to finish the tunnelling work in four months. After that, we need a year to build cross passages, lay tracks and complete overhead electrical work and trials. The work on remaining stretch will be done by August 2016,” a CMRL official said.
Two tunnel boring machines (TBM) have drilled a distance of 948 metres from the Nehru Park to Egmore. Meanwhile, several TBMs are tunnelling the earth at various sites: Pachaippa’s college to Nehru Park, Shenoy Nagar and Kilpauk stations, Kilpauk to Shenoy Nagar station and Shenoy Nagar to Thirumangalam. After this, constructing the cross passages will begin.
In case of an emergency, commuters can take the walkway — that runs along the length of every tunnel — use the cross passage, built at every 250 metres along the walkway and move to the adjacent tunnel.
The phase I of the Chennai Metro Rail project had to be complete by 2015, but there has been a year’s delay in construction so far. “Minor delays are normal in any infrastructure project. Due to economic slowdown, a few contractors have been affected,” the official said. Similarly, though the elevated corridor from Koyambedu to Alandur had to be operational by March, the construction of stations made a tardy progress that pushed the commencement of services to October.
Of the 32 stations in the Chennai Metro Rail, 19 will be underground. It takes Rs. 300 crore and Rs. 100 crore to build one km of tunnel and one underground station respectively.
